According to Internet Movie Database, Fisher had said their costumes in the previous two films had been so long that viewers could not say "she was a woman", which is low in all The Return of the Jedi. Costume Designer Aggie Guerard Rodgers noted that the inspiration for Leia slave equipment came from the artwork of fantasy and science popular fiction illustrator Frank Frazetta. Rodgers had a "no underwear in space" of policies that Fisher prevented from wearing a bra, adhesive tape was used instead.
As the metal structure at the top did not meet Fisher's skin especially well before each shot someone made sure breasts of the actress were adequately covered. Several scenes had to be re-shooting "wardrobe malfunction" occurred. An alternative version, the rubber suit was created and used for stunts.
