This article introduces the reader interested as a way to shed light on an aspect of chess history that the reader can not be too familiar. Island Lewis is set at least an interesting border between Arabic and European interpretations of the ages of chess and design. Before the 11th century the dominant influence about chess in Europe was of Islam. Muslim craftsmen, following the dictates of their religion, were willing to paint, sculpt, draw, or chisel something like Figure human. Europeans, however, were not so limited and the Isle of Lewis chess were a consequence of artistic freedom.
The Isle of chess pieces Lewis was discovered in the New Hebrides, a group of islands off the west coast of Scotland in 1831. There are 93 pieces in total, and were put on public display on 11 April 1831 by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. It is believed that probably originated from a craftsman `s shop in Trondheim, Norway, dating from a period between 1150-1200 AD. You can easily seen on the Isle of Lewis chess pieces, that European influence had finally reached the chessboard of medieval Europe. Far from abstract designs Muslim, Isle of Lewis chessmen were clearly, even aggressively, imitating the human form. The parts are clearly recognizable as the king and queen (both engraved on seat position), the bishop, wearing his miter, a knight on his horse complete with shield, helmet, and nose guard. The tower was represented by a guard (a prison guard), and Berserker is usually described as "a", a Norse warrior who probably went to war after eating hallucinogenic mushrooms. The laborers were carved obelisks as a boundary marker, and in the original island of Lewis chessmen were made of walrus tusks and whale teeth.
Unlike Today `s more standardized designs Staunton, Isle of Lewis chess pieces have an excess of personality and craft. The first thing one realizes one is short stature compared with body head. The queen has her left hand up to his face like, "Oh, what now?" The Guardian, or Berserker (ie, tower) is shown staring eyes, and biting savagely into his shield. The bishop is easily recognized with miter headdress and a cane in his right hand. Both the Knights and Berserkers have a very clever design of the coat of mail throughout his body. The Isle of Lewis chess pieces would make a very nice gift or for display or play.
Today, the 93 original pieces from the Isle of Lewis chess pieces are exhibited in two regions. Eleven pieces are in Edinburgh at the Museum Scottish National and the other 82 pieces are in the British Museum. Interestingly, if one wants to play a chess game using those pieces on a board 32-3/4 "squares would be needed. In the history of chess, the Isle of Lewis chessmen had its time, but have not disappeared. Many online chess sites, including the present article is bound to recognize its historic value and sell them. The Isle of Lewis chess pieces are dead, long live the island of chess pieces Lewis!
