Originally Khokhloma wooden tableware were produced in monasteries and Tsar Court only. At that time Khokhloma tableware production was not large scale. Was it because of expensive imported tin. In the 1720s after the end of the can flow from the Northern War Russia increased. The price fell and the material came to reach of many teachers. Production and sales of brightly painted hand-made works of art expanded.
Thus, in the nineteenth century themes Khokhloma painting were famous not only in Russia but in Persia, India, Middle East, U.S. and Australia. Export Khokhloma articles grew after the worldwide exhibition in 1889 in Paris.
Nizhegorodskoye zemstvo in 1916 established the first School of Arts Working timber and Semyonov Crafts. Folk art and folklore flourished in Volga region, near Nizhny Novgorod province. No other territory in Russia, could match the number and originality of the folk arts and crafts that had sprang to life and developed in local communities. The art of Khokhloma paint on wooden tableware is the type of folk art crafts of Nizhny Novgorod, which became more popular in Russia and countries foreigners.
The "grass blades" decorative motifs and unique color scheme Khokhloma suggest that art is rooted in the culture of the old decoration Russia, while the imitation of gilt ornaments on wood dates back to medieval Russian handicraft skills. The technical picture has improved somewhat, but remains essentially the same as in the ancient time.
Russian Painting Khokhloma surprises with its delicate grass pattern and festive color, which is based on the combination red cinnabar and flittering gold on black lacquer frame. This is a feature specific Khokhloma. Masters used tin powder and lacquer to obtain the color of gold. Now they use aluminum powder.
First, the dishes in an art form around dried linden wood, which become bowls, vases, cups, plates and spoons.
They are dry and covered with red and brown primer, so you start looking like dirt. The articles are not coated with oil paint. Next, polish with aluminum powder. They become dull shiny, like silver, and go to the division of painting. Painted articles are then varnished and hardened kilns at a temperature of 120-130 degrees. The heat turns the varnish yellow, the "silver" in "gold" and soothes bright design with an even tone, gold.
Khokhloma plates, cups and wooden drink pots were used for serving food at holiday parties.
