"Sweetheart Pretty Woman" Julia Roberts rocketed to become Hollywood
Copyright © 2008 Ed Bagley
Pretty Woman – 4 Stars (Excellent)
"Pretty Woman" was originally a script as a dark drama about prostitution in Los Angeles, but luckily, producer Film Laura Ziskin said "No" and what started as a very thoughtful film, became negative in one of the most popular and financially successful comedies romantic of all time. Find out why.
With a production cost of $ 14 million worldwide and a gross of $ 464 million, was Laura Ziskin to be smiling all the way to the bank.
Character Pretty Woman, Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) is a down-on-the prostitute of fortune who is hired by Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), a wealthy businessman and corporate raider, as arm candy for business functions.
The deal works well, but begins to get complicated when Edward discovers Vivian is not only a hooker on Hollywood Boulevard, but also a woman of substance, and Vivian begins to fall in love in love in a situation that essentially has no future.
There is nothing positive about the common perception of a prostitute, but Vivian breaks through normal perceptions by viewers quickly getting beyond her obvious good looks and reveal their inner beauty, feelings clear and a commitment not to settle for a comfortable lifestyle, Edward financed, and arm candy and companion.
His willingness to move away from fee agreement for his performance ultimately drew the attention of Edward, and story line of Hollywood takes over. Vivian gets so nice that we cheer for her as she is his ground and forces Edward to take a decision. Both Vivian and Edward experience some serious personal growth that viewers can relate to and appreciate.
The story line reminds me to George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, which became the basis for the Broadway musical "My Fair Lady" with Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle, a poor girl flower that turns into a beautiful princess. Vivian's character also reminds me of Audrey Hepburn's role as Holly Golightly, another lady of the night in "Breakfast at Tiffany's ".
Director: Garry Marshall completely avoids negative in this film by Vivian prudent management role, and playing characters around as a concert master fine tuning of an orchestra. His work was a long way in helping Pretty Woman win a Golden Globe for Best Picture. Richard Gere picked Golden Globe for Best Actor, and Hector Elizondo won best actor Golden Globe as the hotel manager, Barney Thompson.
The Shining Star in Pretty Woman was Julia Roberts. She was relatively unknown at the time, and walked away with a Golden Globe for Best Actress and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
Beautiful Women, published in 1990, was notable for the number of women leaders who rejected the role of Vivian, including Molly Ringwald, Meg Ryan, Michelle Pfeiffer and Daryl Hannah. Julia Roberts won function by default, but she did most of his opportunity and the film quickly became her boyfriend of Hollywood's latest, a role he held for nearly 15 years.
Al Pacino also turned down the role of Edward Lewis, leaving the door open for Richard Gere.
Here are some key trivia in the movie:
1) The opera in San Francisco Eduardo Vivian flies in a private jet is "La Traviata", the story of a Parisian courtesan who falls for a rich young man.
2) Richard Gere actually plays the piano himself in a scene from the night, even composed the music he plays.
3) The sports car to take Edward beginning of the movie is a Lotus Esprit. Ferrari Porsche and rejected the opportunity of advertising because they want to be partners in order to prostitutes. Lotus won big because Esprit sales tripled during the year.
The film also benefited from its title and its association with "Oh, Pretty Woman" worldwide success of Roy Orbison recorded 26 years earlier.
I liked Pretty Woman, and not just because of Julia Roberts jumping-off-the-screen appeal, especially after Edward Vivian escorts Rodeo Drive shopping, demonstrating that clothing can be completed even a very attractive woman. Even more important is its courage, determination, the substance and dignity of stress.
If you like movies and the relationship of romantic comedies, Pretty Woman is a must see.
