Who has not heard of the Great Wall of China? Nobody, I suppose. Even young children and are fascinated by one of the greatest achievements of mankind. Visit the wall and never be the same!
World's longest manmade structure measures 6400 kilometers or 4,000 miles, or so you think. Due to rugged terrain not entirely clear how long it is, but that figure is approaching.
It is often said the Great Wall of China is so great that even visible from the moon.
However, this is an urban legend, which dates from the time mankind had yet to visit the moon.
No astronaut who actually went to the moon, said he had seen the wall. This is understandable when you know that is only 10 meters or 30 feet wide (maximum) and is about the same color as its surroundings.
Another myth says the Great Wall of China around China.
Not true: it lies on the northeast. Built between the 5th century BC to the 16th century to protect borders north of the Chinese Empire. The country's current borders are much further north and west.
The oldest parts are dirt, rocks and wood. More later also bricks, tiles and lime is used. Watchtowers were built for storing weapons.
Several sections near Beijing have been renovated and now attract millions of tourists each year. Elsewhere, in more remote areas, often in a poorer state or have been destroyed to make room for new construction.
Visit to the Great Wall of China is an unforgettable experience. It is the culmination of many trips to Asia. However, be aware of the wall is often very steep. People elderly may have trouble keeping your balance and many will never walk more than a few kilometers. The stairs are uneven, the surface is rough and the wall is sometimes just a few feet wide – can be a problem if there are not many people walking by.
And yet, it's something you should not miss!
The most popular place to enter this Megastructure is Badaling, 80 km northwest of Beijing. There is a new motorway linking the capital of Badaling. Here most groups of tourists to come. No wonder it is very busy. The part was built during the Ming Dynasty.
If you prefer a quieter section, I recommend Mutianyu, 70 km northeast of Beijing. It is also very well preserved, surrounded by forests and rivers, including not less than 22 towers. At Mutianyu wall is 7 to 8 meters high and 4 to 5 meters wide.
No matter if you find it too touristy or not, you have not seen in China if you have not been to the wall.
