T RAUMATISED United Nations (UN) personnel in Afghanistan have been ordered to stay home after Taliban militants broke into a guesthouse in the capital, killing eight people in an attack that is forcing the world body to reassess its mission in the devastated country by war.
The attack underscored the dangers facing the United Nations and Afghan officials in the organization of a runoff election after fraud marred first round of voting, on 20 August, and the challenge for the led military force to stop the Taliban insurgency determined.
This comes as the Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) said two members of the military operation in Afghanistan died in bomb blasts in the south on Wednesday, including an American.
The guesthouse assault that left five members of United Nations personnel foreigners and three Afghans killed, demonstrated the ease with which Taliban militants can penetrate the security of Kabul relationship. A Taliban spokesman, according to the Associated Press (AP) yesterday, said the attack had designed to undermine the second round of presidential elections on November 7, the target was a small hotel Home to the largest concentration of UN staff working in the election.
UN spokesman Aleem Siddique said at least nine United Nations officials who survived the assault of two hours in the guesthouse Bakhtar had been evacuated to Dubai in the UAE yesterday.
The UN has ordered its employees to remain "closure" with their movements restricted Siddique said, declining to give details for security reasons. Another UN employee said he took the majority of staff were at home.
Restrictions A UN internal memo that ordered the movement for the rest of the week indicates that the departments of the United Nations is reviewing the lists of essential staff and nonessential, suggesting that some people can be moved outside the country for their own safety.
On 19 August 2003 truck bombing of the headquarters of UN in Baghdad, which killed 22 people, led the UN to withdraw from Iraq for several years.
United States President Barack Obama, meanwhile, is considering a version of the plan advanced war in Afghanistan by his superior commander, Gen. Stanley McChrystal.
This reduced the mission increase U.S. military forces to achieve the broader goals of the commander of the protection of Afghan cities and key infrastructure. But with fewer troops, the strategy is likely to cut back on ambitious McChrystal, amounting to official described as "McChrystal Light."
A senior military says that the use of homemade bombs extends far beyond Afghanistan and Iraq, causing the arms of a global problem requiring a solution internationally.
In congressional testimony released yesterday, Army Lt. Gen. Thomas Metz said there had been over 3,500 incidents improvised explosive devices in the last year and the number is increasing.
Metz chief U.S. military organization charge of the fight against bombs. He said that the violent extremists have easy access to materials to make improvised explosive devices and the use of telecommunications networks for the exchange information about how to improve them.
Standing in before dawn, Obama was the real cost of war in Afghanistan: Americans returning in the cases covered pavilion, while much of the nation sleeps in peace.
In a midnight dash to the base of Delaware, where the forces of U.S. dead abroad return home, Obama met yesterday the return of the 18 Americans who fell. All were killed in Afghanistan this week, a brutal stretch that in October became the deadliest month for U.S. troops since the war began.
The dramatic image of a president on the track was a portrait not witnessed in years. Former President George W. Bush spent time with military families suffering, but never went to Dover to meet the remains from the cargo aircraft. Obama did know the weight will soon be able to send more troops to war.
To speak of all of its potential troop surge – maybe 40,000, a figure perhaps some other large – Obama had a sad reminder of the quantity that counts: one.
His name was Dale R. Griffin, an Army sergeant Terre Haute, Ind. It was the last fallen soldier to come before Obama. And his body was the only one who is honored in the light of media permission from his family. An 18-year ban on such coverage rose this year under the supervision of Obama.
The President led a team of officials in the gray C-17 cargo plane with Griffin, and then retreats, where he spent several minutes in a line of honor.
It was not quite the 4 am The sky was black and a yellow light came from the posts accompanying the flight. The only sounds were a unit of energy buzzing in the plane and the cracking of the cameras. A blue vehicle carrying members of the family of Griffin stopped.
The president saluted as six soldiers in camouflage and helmets Griffin led black still in a waiting white van.
The military calls the process of a decent transfer, not a ceremony, because there is nothing to celebrate. The cases are not labeled as coffins, although looking out that way, wrapped in flags.
On a clear fall night, the president compressed Dover in 40 minutes. Immediately there was talk privately in a chapel with the whole family Membe
