This is the most common question from aspiring basketball players. And the most common and perhaps the weakest answer given is "Yes". And I say that the garbage for that.

We go through this logic. If you are 6 feet tall, after coming to pick up a book on the top shelf of a 7 foot rack not be difficult. Yes, you may have to reach out to a few centimeters, but certainly will not be imposed. But the important thing to note is that are not jumping, you are just stretching. If you are 5 feet tall, then you may have to go to get that book on the top shelf. Explore this more – I'm sure you've heard of LeBron James and Spud Webb?

LeBron James – standing 6'8''y 250 pounds, has a 41 inch vertical.

Spud Webb – was one of the shortest players in the NBA, standing only 5'7 ", however, won the Slam Dunk contest in 1986. There was a amazing 42 inch vertical!

So we have a 5'7 "player with a more upright than a player's height 6'8"! I think you get the picture now. You do not need to jump higher altitude.

Definition 1: vertical jumps require strength to push off the ground. Please note, not height, but the force.

• 1. POWER
• 2. SPEED
• 3. TECHNICAL

It is important, you need all three to the condition an all round athlete.

POWER: Focus on strength training, particularly around the quadriceps and calves. Squats hop depth jumps, push UPS, deadweight and reverse toe raises and such are examples. What we're trying to do here is to strengthen the shin muscles hamstrings. Note – we are strengthening the muscles not normally associated with increasing our vertical jump like the calf muscle or quad muscles, but instead, the muscles around them. The reason for this is that muscles will not produce big leaps power unless your muscle capacity opposite is strong enough to handle it.

It is very important to have a dedicated calendar in a period of weeks only to strengthen their groups muscle.

SPEED: Focus on cardio exercises here, specifically high-intensity cardio such as sprinting. Another good exercise is jumping rope. Not only give you a cardiovascular workout, but uses some of the muscles needed to jump.

When all the muscles are stronger than complement each other and with the combination of speed that is new, you will feel a real difference.

TECHNIQUE: You now have to focus specifically on the exercises which focus only on the vertical – dynamic step overs, split jumping jacks. Work on your footwork, getting the right balance between power and speed.

Continue focusing on its power, speed and technique to reach its optimum vertical. Good luck.
